Yes, the 16th is Dia de la Independencia here, but the party kicks off the night before with a "Grito," when the president (or, in a town or city - the mayor) appears before the gathered populace and shouts the traditional cry of independence, which begins with recognition of the heroes of the revolution, and closes this year with:
“¡Viva el Bicentenario de la Independencia!
¡Viva el Centenario de la Revolución!
¡Viva México!
¡Viva México!
¡Viva México!”
Quick and to the point. Then it's on to the celebrations.

San Miguel de Allende's central square, packed with thousands waiting for the celebrations to begin.

Mayor Luz Maria Nuñez Flores waves the flag after delivering her
grito to the crowd.

A scaffolding erected before the
parroquia (the cathedral) erupts in fireworks commemorating the bicentennial.

And somewhere, the corner of my camera can be seen sticking out from behind some guy's head in a group photo.
