No justice of the peace, no peace!

Same-sex couples in San Diego gathered at the County Clerk's offices today, but instead of getting marriage licenses as planned, they protested a stay on the recent ruling that overturned Proposition 8. One couple presented clerk David Butler with a letter outlining their legal reasons for requesting a marriage license despite the stay. Another couple was joined by protesters in blocking the doors to the marriage license division of the office. Nine were arrested in the peaceful protest. (NOTE: I originally posted that 12 were arrested based on information I got from a spokesman at the scene. They revised their numbers down. I thought 12 sounded too high when I heard it.)

Access wasn't blocked, and at least three straight couples entered the offices to get married during the protest.

UPDATE: I've seen at least one published report that said heterosexual couples were prevented from entering the offices to get their marriage licenses today. This was not the case. Here's a photo of some members of a wedding party entering the offices to get married, by walking along a wall behind deputies and protesters. That's the happy bride at far left, she's already in the office.

What were they charged with? Loitering? It sounds like there was no obstruction of any sort.

What a wonderful way to protest!

They were arrested for blocking access to county offices. I'm not sure of the specific charges, but I hope to update my post as I get more information.

My compliments to the protesters.

We should take it national.

Looking forward to the update on what happened to them in custody and what happens next.

Thanks for posting.

Heads up, thehe photo with the "Shame you" comment you have the names reversed. Brian is left, Michael is right. The boys were released yesterday, lastnight we were still waiting word about the girls release

Hi Jase. I'll correct that. One photographer in our group got the names & we all shared the IDs. I guess they transposed who was who. Same info at SignOn. Thanks for your help and for the update.

Thank you to all of those who responded when we planned the Free the Equality 9 rally! Two excellent awareness and press opportunities around this issue. I am proud to have been there and very proud to be a S.A.M.E. member right now. It is time for our tactics to match our demands!
